Well I figured Jake would end up being hated despite only kissing Whitney. Though odds are he probably a cool guy that just happens to be dating Whitney. I do hope that Peter learned something from all of this and if he gets a crush on another girl then he'll be at least a little more outgoing with her and take some chances.
[DOUBLEPOST=1434980503,1434978448][/DOUBLEPOST]wanted to add that at this point Peter should at least try to stay friends with Whitney and not avoid her completely. Doing the later can make things worse in the long run

Having experienced something distinctly similar when I myself was in school I empathize with Peter, but I find the apparent audience reaction to Jake (as described in the page description, at least) perplexing.

Too much TMI...Too much TMI!!!

I must agree with @Radagast here. Granted that Jake is Whitney's boyfriend, he has done absolutely nothing to warrant this much hate. It's not like he goes out of his way to punch cats in the face, flirt with other women, or physically abused/bullied anyone that we know of.

@RJ_Prime
Stage 3: Bargaining
Peter tries to bargain with the higher ups to see if the can get rid of Jake.

Stage 4: Depression
Tired of waiting, Peter spirals into depression and becomes a goth.

Stage 5: Acceptance
...
Peter enjoys the goth life too much and has accepted the darkness.
#Dark_Humor

But man oh man, I can't help but feel bad for Peter for (1)Waiting way too long (From the sounds of it, Whitney and Jake were flirting for weeks), (2)Getting the perfect gift, and (3) Getting burned on the bus.

It's because the whole time people were rooting for Peter to win Whitney over in this arc. Instead Jake got her and although we know nothing about him, he's an obstacle that's keeping Peter from getting her, aside from his own insecurities. Jake could probably be the nicest guy and still get hate for "Stealing" Whitney from Peter, even though he was his own roadblock for the most part.

It's basically what happens when fans have a certain ship and then someone comes along and keeps that ship from happening.

Very good advice, indeed (read below)!

And yeah, this pretty much sums up the situation in its entirety. Particularly since a good percentage of the readers know that 1) Whitney is based on my wife, so it's almost like they expect Peter and Whitney to just automatically be together from the moment they first meet (on the contrary, I'm trying to write it to be more like real life -- every lasting relationship should be based on a solid friendship, first and foremost), and 2) they've seen what happens in the Peter & Whitney comics I've posted to my FA gallery, which have included some pretty significant spoilers hidden in the dialog (I won't say where).

Soooo yeah, both those things combined, I can see how Jake would suddenly become Public Enemy #1 in the P&C Fandom after only appearing in a single panel locking lips with Whitney. He could very well end up being the most kind-hearted character in the comic, but at this point he may as well be punting a basket of puppies.

Maybe he'll punt Krogar's entourage of Kittens while he's at it XD
