As I discussed earlier, I was working on a new revision of the NSFW policy that clarifies what is allowed on the site and what measures need to go for tagging it. As of this morning, this is the new policy on Acceptable Use/NSFW content.

THAT SAID, I want to point out that this policy is living, and is subject to change or clarification. There may be details that were missed, or clarification that is needed, and I reserve the right to get changes made. But as far as the current policy, all of the artists and staff have reviewed and gave it their nod.

Katbox Acceptable Use Policy

Katbox comics, blogs and forums may feature content that is not safe for work and it is the requirement that such content be appropriately managed and tagged so that readers and visitors are adequately informed of what kind of content they will be seeing.

For the purpose of these policies, NSFW content includes any of the following:
  • Moderate Nudity (breasts)
  • Visual depictions implying sex are considered NSFW but postable with tags, so long as there is no visible genitalia, penetration or sexual fluids. While this should cover most of the issues, I'd like to add a reminder to use common sense with this, and if there's ever any doubt, to get in touch with me.
  • Note: This does not include talking about sex, showing the afterglow (dependent on nudity level) or suggestive but non-sexual items/positions/people
This content is allowed on the Katbox, provided it has a layer of notification on it in the form of:
  • Age verification (for comic pages)
  • NSFW spoiler tag (for forum posts)
This applies for any content posted on the forums from sites like FurAffinity and Tumblr. So long as it is tagged or flagged appropriately, there are no problems posting it on the Katbox forums. If this content is found on the forums without an appropriate spoiler tag, forum moderators will correct it. If it is found on site pages where the age verification is not working, the webmaster will be informed and corrected.

EXPLICIT content, which includes:
  • Full frontal nudity with exposed genetalia
  • Direct sex/sexual situations of a non-implied and graphic nature
  • Extreme, graphic violence
  • Graphic and inflammatory depictions of racism, sexism, etc
  • Any other material illegal in the state of California
This content may not be posted on the Katbox forums or on comics. While artists are not prohibited from posting this content on their personal sites such as FA, Tumblr and so on.

Regarding language, in a writing environment it is difficult to define language policies as strictly as image policies. To that end, there is no specific restrictions on language except for the inappropriate use of derogatory, inflammatory or bigoted language. Instances of language are addressed on a case-by-case basis.

For all NSFW content, while there are points above, a “common sense” approach works best. For most, there is a good notion of what falls on the explicit side of NSFW, and if it is something that is questionable, artists should reach out to ask for clarification.

The ideal goal for the acceptable use policy is not to censor art, or require that artists “check-in” with management for any idea. The intent is to clearly define what level of work is allowed, and how to appropriately tag and label it.

What does this mean to you:

More or less a clarification of what our policies are, and really they are about the same. Don't post outright porn, don't post guro-levels of violence and so on. Anything else, especially of the NSFW content that some comics have, need simple tagging for the forum with a spoiler tag. The content on pages will be behind age verification entries, and while these for now are on a comic-by-comic basis (i.e. one NSFW page requires that a user age verify on the whole comic), we are working on a new system that will make age verification occur on a page-by-page basis. I cannot give an ETA on that deployment, but as details come out, I will try to post here to update you.

Forum and Gallery mods:

Please revise any cleaning from before to follow these policies. If something qualifies as NSFW, spoiler tag it to ensure that there is a clicking layer.

While I believe I've handled the bulk of the staff and artists' questions, I am open to other questions for clarification, but please note that changes are going to be run by the Katbox members and I will not unilaterally alter policy.

Clarification from how i understood the post:

So is *Some* of the topic carpet bombing going to be undone or what?

Does this mean stuff is going to p-much be as it was before SK did his thing?

Does this also mean that the gallery is just going to remain as is albeit with a few things cleared out of it?

At any rate great job C, When this whole thing started to happen the phrase "Rearranging the Deck Chairs on the Titanic." sprung to my mind :P (Implying it no longer does)

I cannot un-delete content, as far as I know (and to be totally honest, I don't know, if someone with more knowledge of the forum software can tell me, I'd apprecdiate it) but that said if there was NSFW content that just needed tags can be re-uploaded so long as it is tagged properly.

Note to forum mods, this may happen, so don't pounce on things as duplicate content until you confirm whether or not it is a duplicate or a re-uploaded item.

As far as the gallery goes, we are still working out the kinks but as I know things right now we are going to move to a gallery system that allows better tagging. For the time being, I'd like to ask the gallery mods to go through and remove the explicit material and (if possible) tag the NSFW material with a thumbnail or message.

I appreciate everyone's help and support on this. It has been a wild few days, and getting this out feels like the first real big thing I've done as manager here. And so far, so good I hope!
