Hello everyone. I have some news regarding Chalo's Patreon page.

This last month was rough on us both (April 2015). And I'm sure many of you have noticed that Chalo and I have been largely absent. This creates a real problem for Patreon, as we were in a monthly billing system and there's no way to tell it to stop billing people without taking down the pledges or the entire page itself.

Chalo needs flexibility in his update schedule to handle the changes in his life. Chalo's decided to move to a "Per Las Lindas Update" billing schedule and he's asked me to help remake the page with new reward tiers, new goals, and an explanation of what we need to do in order to stay afloat.

But there's also something else to consider. This update was sudden, even to me. I just found out this morning and the Patreon billing cycle was coming up soon. We had to act very quickly. If you have suggestions or see something wrong, let me know as soon as you can!

Here's the run-down:

1. In order to scale to Chalo's schedule and personal life, we will now only bill patrons an amount that scales with the number of times we update LL. The money has to be able to be controlled depending on our ability to perform.

2. Similarly, we now can only provide rewards to people that scale to the number of times we update LL. We are not losing the Ask Blog or the Sketch streams. They will just update proportionately to the amount of times LL updates, as outlined in their goal descriptions.

3. The pledge tiers are now "per update" and we will update a maximum of 4 times. This means you will owe $0 to 4 x (your pledge level) per month. Patreon bills at end of month for the updates.

4. The $1 a month pledge tier has been changed to a $.50 per update tier. Making the max out of pocket at this tier could bill to be $2. Billing still happens at the end of the month, so this will mean less wasted money in Credit Card fees.

5. The $5 a month tier is still there. At $1.25 per update.

6. A new $2 per update tier exists where people can vote on which characters will answer in the ask blog. This affects one of the updates per month so Chalo can still have creative freedom on who answers most of the time.

7. A new $3.75 per update tier exists for priority in the sketch streams. Two random people will be chosen from this tier to request a sketch before asking the stream chat. The reasoning for this was that we wanted a balance between everyone being able to participate and giving rewards to higher-tier patrons without making the streams exclusive.

8. The old $40 a month tier is still there. At $10 per update. This tier is now a little better, as a random person from this tier will be chosen to have their question on Ask the High Prime answered every month.

Please help us through this difficult time with your suggestions and feedback on how to make this better. The time crunch to create a whole new system is very stressful and we need to get this right.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, let's say someone donates one dollar and you guys update four times a month. At the end of the month that person would be charged four dollars?

Correct. Let's assume you just want to see sketches and inks of comic pages and nothing else. There's a $1.25 tier for that. This is the amount that is charged per LL update.

If we update 0 times, you pay $0.
If we update 1 times, you pay $$1.25 at the end of the month.
If we update 2 times, you pay $2.50 at the end of the month.
If we update 3 times, you pay $3.75 at the end of the month.
If we update 4 times, you pay $5.00 at the end of the month.

Patreon handles the billing and LL pages will be marked as billable creations, letting people know how much was collected on every update. Then at the end of the month, actual money is exchanged based on the number of LL updates.

I have a question regarding the $25 pledge reward. It says that you have to hold on to the $25 slot for a month to get a question answered next month. Since Chalo's Las Lindas updates can vary from month to month, wouldn't it be unfair to some people if they pay for 4 updates worth and others only pay for like 1 or 2 updates worth? I think you guys need to take this into account as well.

In case you are wondering, I managed to grab the slot, so I'd really like to know how this will work out before I commit to it.

So does this happen automatically? If someone's on the $1 tier, are they now on the 0.5 tier, or would they have to change this themselves?

Hmm, that is a very good point. We'll revise it. If you have an idea, let me know.

I would highly suggest that you revisit Patreon and see what it did with your pledge after the change, in case you need to revise it.

I do actually have an idea. Maybe the complexity of the answered question can be based off of how many pledges you made. So like for example:

Paid for 1 LL update: Simple answer with just one panel and one character
Paid for 4 LL updates: More involved answer with a few panels and up to 3 characters

The 2 and 3 LL updates can be somewhere in the middle of those two.

I just had another idea. Maybe the amount of LL updates you pay for can allow you to have more influence over the question's outcome. So for example it could look like this:

Paid for 1 LL update: Just ask the question, Chalo has full control over the outcome
Paid for 2 LL updates: Get to decide if answer will be SFW or NSFW
Paid for 3 LL updates: Get to decide the background
Paid for 4 LL updates: Get to talk over with Chalo how the outcome will look before he does it. Chalo can give a description on how he would draw the outcome and if you don't like how it will turn out, you can ask a different question or have Chalo make some minor changes. Almost like a mini commission with Chalo still having the final say in the outcome.

Sorry, man. One of the biggest reasons Chalo loves that blog is the creative freedom it brings. A system where it becomes more complex or reverts more into reader control would take that away from him and we can't have that.

I have Chalo on Skype now and we're talking about a change to the $10 per update reward tier that will iterate on this idea. Gonna put it up in a few moments.

Oh why'd I have to open my big mouth. I could have had a guaranteed answered question for $25. lol

Oh well, I guess I'll have a shot with the $10 one then.

I recognize that. Nice guys shouldn't finish last. I'll see if I can come up with something.

I know you're doing it to accommodate a flexible schedule, But could you take a stab occasionally at how much you'll be updating anyways?

I assume you mean how much can we handle? In a perfect world, we will do the max of 4. It's just that under the monthly system, if anything went wrong, we'd be screwed. Under this system, no matter what we do, we'd be providing what people are paying for.

It's such a kick in the pants for customers to have to deal with hiccups in the billing. Like, if you paid for 6 High Prime updates and we can only provide 4, then that means it's 8 the next month... which means we're more likely to not meet those goals too. And it just snowballs from there because you can never stop the billing.

With this, we will shoot for four and yet have a plan for emergencies.
