Yup new friends, even if they only show up here on the date arc. Who knows, maybe they'll show up again in the future. Perhaps if some support cast is needed for a comic or two.

Now for the comic itself: Yes hate can be a pretty powerful motivating force as we've seen countless times throughout history and into modern times. Hatred of certain individuals simply because of who/what they are has sadly been one of the more common reasons certain people have been persecuted. Phil is partially right about the failure to understand. Sometimes when you don't really interact with groups of people and all you may know about them is gossip and rumors, that can lead to bias. Thankfully when it's based only on that a few good experiences with those people can do much to relieve that. The truly dangerous ones though are those who purposely drive the hatred. Whether they're just stubborn and don't want to let go of certain beliefs or have accumulated power by spreading and fostering such hatred, those are the ones that can be the most difficult to deal with. I don't know which category the drunk jerk falls into, hopefully his bias is just that born of ignorance and misinformation.

You know now that I think about it maybe we will see these two in the future. Since Phil and Kate work on consulting about magic and creatures affected by the event perhaps we will at some point see them come in for just that: a consult.

Seeing this, what first comes to mind is that they really needed 2 more people to ride with them. Because those rides give bigger water splashes with more weight in the raft. Which would have lead to wet t-shirts. Just sayin'.

Regarding the author comments...frankly, anything goes. For instance, I've chatted with old ladies about politics on similar rides...and then later we all started wryly chuckling about probability considering that our little raft was spinning just enough so that whenever we hit the rapids they got soaked and I remained dry...up until the last bit of wake, that is...
