Hmmm, so why does it switch back after a while? Does the magic have to be maintained in order for it to hold so if the mage doesn't invest every once in a while it shifts back?

It's something that pops up every now and then in fantasy. Usually not well explained, but the general consensus is that there is something about the structure of precious metals that makes them both hard to replicate and break down magical bonds when they are replicated.

I think there is a tiny little typo in there.... "My using the ancient art of alchemy..." .... should be "BY using etc,etc." .... shouldn't it?
